What are broken capillaries and spider veins?

Broken capillaries and spider veins — medically known as telangiectasia — are small, dilated blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. They often appear as fine red, blue or purple lines that can form web-like patterns, most commonly on the face and legs. They are usually harmless, but many people see them as a cosmetic concern.

What causes them?

Common contributors include genetics, sun exposure, ageing (as skin thins), hormonal changes, extreme temperatures, and lifestyle factors such as prolonged standing. Trauma or pressure to the skin can also cause capillaries to break and become visible.

Types

These include telangiectasias (fine dilated capillaries, often on the face), reticular veins (blue–green veins on the legs), and varicose veins (larger, twisted veins that may cause discomfort).
