What is melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition that shows as brown or greyish-brown patches, usually on the face — the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. It is more common in women, often appears between the ages of 20 and 50, and is more common in people who tan easily or have naturally brown skin.

What causes it?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but it is thought to relate to hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy or with hormonal medications), sun exposure (UV light stimulates melanin) and genetic predisposition. Some skincare products and medications may also contribute.

Types

Melasma is often described by where it appears: centrofacial (forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip — the most common), malar (cheeks and nose) and mandibular (jawline and chin). Because melasma can be stubborn, it is best assessed in a consultation.
