What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition that causes redness, flushing and pimple-like spots. It most often affects the face of fair-skinned adults over the age of 30. Although it can look similar to acne, it is a different condition, and symptoms range from mild to more persistent.

What causes it?

There is no single known cause, but a mix of hereditary and environmental factors can trigger and aggravate it. Common triggers include spicy foods, hot drinks, sun exposure, extreme temperatures, alcohol, stress and some medications.

Types

Recognised subtypes include erythematotelangiectatic (flushing, redness and visible vessels), papulopustular (redness with papules and pustules, often mistaken for acne), phymatous (skin thickening, more common in men) and ocular (affecting the eyes). A consultation helps identify the right approach for your skin.
