What are fine lines and wrinkles?

Fine lines and wrinkles are visible creases and folds that form on the skin, often as part of the natural ageing process. Fine lines are typically shallow and appear first — around the eyes, mouth and forehead — while wrinkles are deeper and tend to become more noticeable with age.

What causes them?

They are caused by a mix of intrinsic ageing (collagen and elastin naturally decline over time, and the skin holds less moisture) and extrinsic ageing (UV exposure, smoking, pollution and repeated facial expressions). UV light in particular breaks down collagen and elastin.

Types

Common types include dynamic wrinkles (from repeated facial movement), static wrinkles (visible at rest), gravity wrinkles (as skin loses support with age) and sleep wrinkles (from pressure during sleep).

Some fine-line and volume concerns are best addressed with treatments discussed at a consultation with our cosmetic medicine team.
