Common Concern
Thinning Hair & Hair Loss
Treatment options for thinning hair, planned at a consultation.
What is thinning hair and hair loss?
Thinning hair and hair loss describe a reduction in hair density and volume on the scalp. Thinning often comes first and can be an early sign of hair loss. Hair loss (alopecia) involves a more complete absence of hair in certain areas or across the scalp.
What causes it?
Common causes include genetics (male and female pattern hair loss), hormonal changes (such as PCOS, menopause or thyroid issues), some medical conditions and medications, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and hairstyling practices that place repeated tension on the hair.
Types
These include androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), telogen effluvium (temporary shedding from stress or illness), alopecia areata (an autoimmune cause of patchy loss), traction alopecia (from tension on the hair), and others.
